‘HERITAGE’

Not stone built on stone, just so,

but the cast of the eye

the jut of the jaw

the music carried

on finger and toe

*

Jigs of locks and laughter

hubbubs of girls and boys

about the gates

of this house restored

windows cast light on the lawn

doors wide open, open wide

*

Heritages speaks through jawline,

eye, chin, the curl of a lip

a people’s lineage chiselled

in sorrow and in hope.
